Highlights

The Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) Notification Program is a voluntary program that allows manufacturers to notify FDA of their determination that a food substance is GRAS. This notification program is intended to help FDA identify potential food safety issues and to facilitate the agency's review of new food substances. Manufacturers are required to submit a GRAS notice to FDA at least 120 days before marketing a new food substance. The notice must include information about the identity of the substance, its intended use, and the basis for the manufacturer's determination that the substance is GRAS. FDA will review the notice and may request additional information from the manufacturer. If FDA has no questions about the notice, it will issue a letter of no objection. If FDA has questions about the notice, it may issue a letter of objection.
